Sang Kiai is a 2013 Indonesian biographical drama film that tells the story of a freedom fighter and one of the founders of Nahdlatul Ulama, Hadratussyaikh Kyai Haji Hasyim Asy'ari. The film is directed by Rako Prijanto and stars Ikranagara, Christine Hakim, Agus Kuncoro, and Adipati Dolken. The film won several awards at the 2013 Indonesian Film Festival, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Sound Editing.

The film is set in 1942, during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia. The Japanese banned the hoisting of the red and white flag, the playing of the song Indonesia Raya, and forced the Indonesian people to perform Sekerei, a salute to the sun. The students of Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School were outraged by the arrest and sought various ways to free their teacher from the Japanese. Eventually, KH Hasyim Asy'ari was released thanks to the diplomacy of his son, KH Wahid Hasyim (Agus Kuncoro). However, the struggle against the Japanese did not stop there. The Japanese also forced the Indonesian people to hand over their crops. The Japanese used Masyumi, an Islamic organization led by KH Hasyim Asy'ari, to promote farming. But it turned out that the crops were collected by the Japanese. Meanwhile, the people were facing a rice crisis, and even the boarding school's barn was almost empty.

When Japan lost the war, the Allies arrived. Soekarno, as the president at that time, sent his envoy to Tebuireng to ask KH Hasyim Asy'ari to help defend the independence. KH Hasyim Asy'ari responded by issuing a Jihad Resolution, which mobilized thousands of students and people to fight bravely against the Allies in Surabaya.
