Mental Omega Map Editor: How to Create and Edit Custom Maps for the Mod

Mental Omega is a popular mod for Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge, which retells, expands and continues the story of the original game. Enhanced with Ares DLL, Mental Omega strives to bring many new features to the game, including a 133-mission campaign, cooperative and a brand new faction: the Foehn Revolt.

One of the features that many fans of the mod enjoy is the ability to create and edit custom maps for skirmish and multiplayer modes. However, not all map editors are compatible with Mental Omega, as the mod adds new terrain types, objects, units and buildings that are not present in the original game. Therefore, a modified version of FinalAlert2 map editor has been included in patch 3.3.3, which allows users to create and edit maps that are fully compatible with Mental Omega 3.3.

In this article, we will show you how to use the Mental Omega map editor to create and edit custom maps for the mod. We will cover the following topics:

  • How to install and launch the map editor

  • How to create a new map or open an existing one

  • How to use the basic tools and functions of the map editor

  • How to add and modify terrain, objects, units and buildings

  • How to set up triggers, waypoints, teams and scripts

  • How to test and save your map

  • How to share your map with other players

How to install and launch the map editor

The Mental Omega map editor is included in patch 3.3.3, which can be downloaded from [the official website] or [Mod DB]. To install the patch, simply extract the contents of the zip file into your Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge directory, where you have installed Mental Omega 3.3. Make sure to overwrite any existing files when prompted.

To launch the map editor, go to your Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge directory and run FinalOmega.exe. You should see a window like this:

This is the main interface of the map editor, where you can create and edit maps for Mental Omega. You can also access various options and settings from the menu bar at the top.

How to create a new map or open an existing one

To create a new map, go to File > New or press Ctrl+N. You will be prompted to choose a map size and a theater (the type of terrain). The map size can range from 20x20 to 200x200 cells, where each cell is equivalent to one tile on the map. The theater can be one of the following:

  • New Urban: A city-like environment with roads, buildings and bridges.

  • New Temperate: A green and lush environment with grass, trees and water.

  • New Snow: A snowy and icy environment with snowdrifts, cliffs and frozen water.

  • New Desert: A sandy and dry environment with dunes, rocks and oases.

  • Lunar: A moon-like environment with craters, dust and low gravity.

  • Subterranean: An underground environment with caves, lava and darkness.

  • Foehn: A unique environment exclusive to Mental Omega, with futuristic structures, energy fields and weather control devices.

After choosing a map size and a theater, click OK. You will see a blank map with a grid of cells. You can zoom in and out using the mouse wheel or the + and - keys. You can also pan the map by holding down the right mouse button and dragging.

To open an existing map, go to File > Open or press Ctrl+O. You will be able to browse your computer for any .map or .yrm files that are compatible with Mental Omega. You can also use File > Recent Files to quickly access the maps that you have recently opened or saved.
